Nasi Goreng Kampung

Everybody loves Nasi Goreng. Nasi Goreng Kampung was my late dad's favorite and we always have it during breakfast. Its the simplest Nasi Goreng with just  a handful of ingredients but it is full of flavor!

At times, we would like to have Nasi Goreng Kampung without the calories. So, I started making my family's recipe of Nasi Goreng without the frying and the massive amount of oil using the PHILIPS Pressure Cooker and it tastes just as delicious. Because my mum loves the slightly oily texture, I added some olive oil right at the very end!

(using the PHILIPS Pressure Cooker)

2 cups of Basmathi rice, wash & drain
1 large onion
2 cloves of garlic
2 tbsp dried prawns, soaked in hot water & drained
8 fresh red chillies, deseeded
5 birds eye chillies
2 cups of water
1 egg
1 ½ tsp salt
1 tbsp olive oil

Method:

  1. Place the onion, garlic, soaked dried prawns, red chillies and birds eye chillies into the PHILIPS Food Processor.
  2. Process the ingredients until coarsely chopped.
  3. Place all the chopped ingredients into the PHILIPS Pressure Cooker Pot and add the rice.
  4. Flavour with salt.
  5. Pour in the water.
  6. Press RICE and the press START on the PHILIPS Pressure Cooker with the vent pointing towards the middle which is for pressure cooking.
  7. When the rice is cooked in 14 minutes, make a crater in the middle of the rice and break the egg in the middle.
  8. Close back the lid and allow it to rest for a few minutes.
  9. After 5 minutes, pour olive oil over the rice and stir the ingredients together. Serve.

Hi. Do we need to release the pressure first before opening the lid to put the egg in?

Hi Marina, i got the same question. Whe you cook the rice is it awal position? So need to release pressure? Appreciate some answers as we bought this cooker but no clear instructions how to use it.

HI Kiddegoat, if you want to brown the meat first, you will need to use the "BAKE" function with the lid opened. Then you can close the lid and cook under pressure mode to soften it. The BAKE function is as if you are using the normal conventional pot.

Yes you can fry as you would normally do, using the BAKE function, Raja Rafy Azman

This recipe that I shared, is Nasi Goreng Kampung cooked the healthy way. I sometimes drizzle some olive oil after the rice has been cooked, to give the 'oily' taste that we are used too.

The pressure within the pot during cooking actually softens the onions & chillies during pressure and brings out the best flavours.

Yes nurvv, you need to release the pressure first before putting in the egg. After you break the egg into the rice, close the lid back & let the egg cook for about 3 mins before serving.

Egg cook is still using rice function?

Cooking with Marina Mustafa said...

You don't need to change the settings as the PHILIPS Pressure Cooker is still hot enough to be able to cook the egg Lots of Love by Harumi Isao. The egg will cook on 'WARM' function.

Hi Esther,

Yes, whenever you cook using the 'PRESSURE' function, you will need to release the pressure first, by turning the knob on top of the PHILIPS Pressure Cooker to the right, in order to even open the lid.

If you use the 'BAKE' function, then the pot is used as normal cooking, with the lid on or off-both are possible.

You can sauté' the onions first by pressing any function at the 'BAKE' function. After the onions have softened, then you put the rice in with water and seasonings. Press the 'RICE' and 'START' for the Pressure function to activate.

Hope my explanation is clear. I do regular demonstrations using the Air Fryer and I post it under 'EVENTS' on my Facebook. If you'd like to learn more, please just check updates on my Facebook which i am more active on and you are most welcome to join my demonstrations.
